The Yale Young African Scholars Programme (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students who plan to pursue tertiary education and make a positive impact as young leaders on the continent.
The program is organized by Yale University, one of the world’s leading institutions of higher learning, and is supported by The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for YYAS, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country.
- Be currently enrolled in a secondary school in Africa.
- Be graduating from secondary school in 2024 or 2025.
- Have an excellent academic record and demonstrate leadership potential.
- Have a strong command of English and be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum.
- Have access to a computer and a stable internet connection for the online program option.
Financial Coverage
YYAS is a fully funded program that covers all costs related to participation, including tuition, travel, accommodation, meals, and materials. There are no application fees or program fees for YYAS. However, participants are responsible for any passport or visa fees, health insurance costs, and personal expenses.

Requirements
Applicants must complete and submit an online application form by the deadline. The application form consists of the following sections:
- Personal information
- Educational background
- Extracurricular activities
- Short answer questions
- Essay questions
- One teacher recommendation

Document Requirements
Applicants must upload the following documents as part of their application:
- A copy of their official transcript or grade report for the current academic year and the previous two years.
- A copy of their national ID card or passport bio page.
- A copy of their standardized test scores (if available).

The application process for YYAS is as follows:
- Create an account on the YYAS online portal.
- Fill out the online application form and upload the required documents.
- Request a teacher recommendation through the online portal.
- Review and submit your application by the deadline.
- Wait for the admission decision via email.
