Are you a young talent from abroad who is socially committed and wants to study for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Germany? If yes, then you might be interested in the SBW Berlin Scholarship, a fully funded scholarship program that supports students with a financially disadvantaged family background and a vision to initiate their own projects for social change.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the SBW Berlin Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
  • You must be between 18 and 30 years old before the start of your university education or fully enrolled in the first, second or max. third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or application for a Master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree.
  • You must have average grades that correspond with a German grade point average of at least 2.0.
  • You must have a relatively low net income or come from a financially disadvantaged family background.
  • You must have a clear and feasible project idea that aims to contribute to the social development of your home country or region.
  • You must have a strong motivation and commitment to study in Germany and to implement your project after graduation.
  • You must have a good command of the German language (at least B1 level) or be willing to learn it intensively before and during your studies.

Financial Coverage

The SBW Berlin Scholarship provides the following benefits to the selected students:
  • A room in a shared student flat in Berlin.
  • A monthly cost-of-living allowance in the amount calculated in section IX of the application form.
  • A complete waiver of tuition fees for the duration of your studies.
  • A possible travel allowance for your journey to Berlin before the start of your studies and for the journey home after you have completed your studies.

Requirement

To apply for the SBW Berlin Scholarship, you must fulfill the following requirement:
  • You must submit a complete and accurate application form with all the required documents and information.
  • You must participate in an online interview with the SBW Berlin team if you are shortlisted.
  • You must agree to the terms and conditions of the SBW Berlin Scholarship contract if you are selected.

Document Requirement

To apply for the SBW Berlin Scholarship, you must provide the following documents along with your application form:
  • A copy of your passport or identity card.
  • A copy of your school leaving certificate or university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur, IB, A-levels, etc.).
  • A copy of your university enrollment certificate or admission letter (if available).
  • A copy of your transcript of records or academic performance report.
  • A copy of your language certificates (German and/or English).
  • A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages) that explains why you want to study in Germany, what your project idea is, and how you plan to implement it after graduation.
  • A project outline (max. 2 pages) that describes the main objectives, activities, target group, expected outcomes, and budget of your project.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV) that highlights your academic and professional achievements, extracurricular activities, and social engagement.
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers, professors, employers, or mentors who can attest to your academic and personal qualities and your project potential.
  • Any other documents that support your application (e.g. certificates, awards, publications, etc.).

Application Procedure

The application procedure for the SBW Berlin Scholarship consists of the following steps:
  • Step 1: Download and fill out the application form from the official website of the SBW Berlin Scholarship.
  • Step 2: Gather all the required documents and scan them as PDF files.
  • Step 3: Send your application form and documents as a single PDF file (max. 10 MB) to bewerbung@sbw.berlin by email. The subject line of your email should be “SBW Berlin Scholarship Application - Your Name”.
  • Step 4: Wait for the confirmation email from the SBW Berlin team that acknowledges the receipt of your application.
  • Step 5: If you are shortlisted, you will be invited for an online interview with the SBW Berlin team. The interview will last about 30 minutes and will focus on your motivation, project idea, and academic background.
  • Step 6: If you are selected, you will receive an acceptance letter and a scholarship contract from the SBW Berlin team. You will have to sign and return the contract within a given deadline to confirm your participation in the program.
  • Step 7: If you are not selected, you will receive a rejection letter from the SBW Berlin team. You can reapply for the next application cycle if you wish.

Deadline

The SBW Berlin Scholarship has two application cycles per year. The deadlines for each cycle are as follows:
  • Cycle 1: May 15 to June 30 (for studies starting in October)
  • Cycle 2: November 15 to December 31 (for studies starting in April)
